In teaching mathematics, there are a lot of teaching media that teacher can use, such as books, whiteboard, video, PowerPoint, mathematics application, etc. Teacher can choose teaching media that suits them and the material. In Sir Jordan’s case, he likes to use PowerPoint as his teaching media.
He organizes
his PowerPoint well. Usually, his presentation starts with the final problem
that we’ll solve. He introduces the final problem to draw the students’
intention. Then, he’ll teaches from the very basic part: introduction. He gives
the definition, examples, theorem, and exercises. In some cases, he gives some
examples to lead the student to the theorem, so the student will understand it
better. After talking about the theorem, there will be some examples or exercises
about the application of the theorem that have to be solved together.
In solving
the problems, Sir Jordan will lead the students. He gives them hint about the
part they have to solve first. For example, when they learned about finding the
measure in each angle in parallel and transversal lines. He pointed out some
angles that had to be solved. He also liked to remind them about the definition
and theorem. So, the students could solve the problems easier.
After solving
some problems, he will give the final problem, the one that he shows in the
start. As previous problems, he will lead the students to solve it together. As
usual, he gives appreciation if they finish solving the final problem.
Not only PowerPoint,
he also likes to use white board. He uses white board to show the steps when
they’re solving a problem. He uses white board so the students will know the
step and not jump to the conclusion only.
In using
the white board, he always looks at the students while talking, and writes
after he finished talking. He said that it’s not appropriate to talk when you
facing the white board. Because you’re talking to the students, not the white
board. It’ll feel like you teach the board, not the students. That’s why he
always looking at his students while talking, and facing the board and writing
after he finished talking. This is also an important note that I got from him
and I’d like to implement it in my teaching.
