To see whether the students understand about the topic or not, teacher can give an assessment. There’s a lot of types of assessment that teacher can use, such as quiz, oral test, group activity, final exam, and many more. Sir Jordan F. Gundran choose group activity and quiz as his assessment type for 7th grades.
The group
activity and quiz are held after they finish learning a chapter. In the group
activity, the students must solve the given problem set in a group of 3-4
members. They also can open their notes to solve the problem. This is done to
see whether the student can use the right formula and solve it or not. The group
activity is also held to train student’s teamwork. Sir Jordan believes that
doing group activity may also enhance student learning because student has a
chance to discuss the concepts within their group mates. In this sense, they
will be prepared for the quiz which is done individually.
After doing
the group activity, they will have an individual quiz. In quiz, the students
have to work individually. They also can’t open their notes or calculator. But the
questions given is not much different from the group activity. The quiz is done
only once. Whether pass or failed, a student quiz is only administered once. That’s
why it’s needed to prepare them for the quiz. They need to practice first thru group
activity.
The criteria of giving grades are as follows.
- Performance task: 40% (group activity)
- Written works: 40% (quiz)
- Quarterly assessment: 20% (quarte exam)
The criteria
are based on assessment criteria in Philippines for all junior high school.
Alongside with
group activity and quiz, Sir Jordan also requires his student to complete their
notes by the end of a chapter. He believes that learning in mathematics is
learning by doing. Lecturing or copying lecture is a form of practice that may
enhance student learning. Usually, he checks their notes while the students are
doing their quiz.
