Time Management in Classroom Preparation – A Practice Teacher’s Perspective

Being a teacher involves more than just teaching; it also requires thorough preparation for the lesson ahead. There's a lot of tasks a teacher must prepare for, like crafting lesson plans, preparing teaching materials such as PowerPoint slides or visual aids, and creating quiz questions for post-lesson practice. Additionally, teachers must review the material they'll be teaching to ensure their information is accurate.

As a practice teacher, I must also prepare for these tasks. Especially since I'll be teaching in English, which is not my primary language. Hence, I need to prepare even more diligently, not merely skimming through the material before class. Apart from lesson preparation, I also need to adhere to the schedule of other SEA-Teacher activities, such as meetings with CLSU's IAO staff to manage documents or participating in educational tours on weekends. Therefore, having good time management skills is crucial for me.

Typically, I would prepare my lesson plans and teaching materials well in advance. As my cooperating teacher, Sir Jordan asks me to submit my lesson plans and teaching materials several days before my teaching session. This allows him to review and provide feedback on my plans and materials. Completing these tasks well ahead of time prevents me from feeling overwhelmed as my teaching day approaches.

After Sir Jordan approves my lesson plans and teaching materials, I practice teaching independently. Sometimes, Sir Jordan observes and provides feedback while I practice teaching. I take note of his suggestions and make improvements accordingly. I often practice various aspects, such as my delivery to students. I need to think of ways to keep students engaged and ensure they understand my teachings easily. I also need to consider ways to involve students during the lesson. Another aspect I practice is my vocabulary and pronunciation. There are many new mathematical terms that are rarely used in daily life, and their pronunciation is unfamiliar to me. For example, types of triangles: equilateral triangle, isosceles triangle, and scalene triangle. Typically, to ensure correct pronunciation, I use the assistance of Google Translate. Sometimes, Sir Jordan also corrects my pronunciation.

I usually don't like to practice a few hours before teaching. In fact, I won't touch the material at all before teaching. Instead, I focus on uplifting my mood. I try to arrange my emotions and heart to feel happy and excited to teach. I believe that a good mood will influence the learning process in my class. If my mood isn't good, how can I uplift the mood of the students and inspire them to participate in the learning process? Therefore, I focus on building a positive mood before teaching. Typically, I listen to music or watch funny videos. I enjoy listening to cheerful and spirited music to uplift my mood before teaching.
